Electrical and computer engineering associate professor Heayoung Yoon was recently appointed to the University Research Committee for a second, three-year term beginning July 2021. Yoon is one of only a handful of faculty to serve in this position twice.
Yoon said she enjoys the exposure to other departments and colleges that working on the research committee provides. She believes that research should be interdisciplinary and is always looking for opportunities to collaborate and support the work of others.
“I think that exposure to the research of other departments provides very valuable experience, and I’m happy that I was given another opportunity to serve on the committee,” Yoon said.
The University Research Committee is responsible for reviewing proposals from the Faculty Scholarly Grant Program, Faculty Release for Scholarly Pursuits, Distinguished Scholarly and Creative Research Awards and the Community-Based Research Program. The committee was established to encourage research and provide funding across the university campus, especially where external funding is difficult to obtain.
Before graduating with her Ph.D. from Penn State, Yoon worked at the Samsung Research Center and later at Nation Laboratories. Her background in industry and academia has given her the perspective and insight to assess and support faculty research efforts.
Yoon is looking forward to serving another term and is excited to work with the new faculty joining the committee.
