The University of Utah Asia Campus celebrated its 10th anniversary in September 2024, commemorating a decade of academic achievement and global collaboration. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, industry partners, and other supporters from around the world gathered in South Korea to participate in community-building events including a Family BBQ & Carnival, a Student & Department Expo, and a Welcome Ceremony.
ECE students and faculty presented their research to the campus community and supporters at the Student & Department Expo. There, students demonstrated and discussed their current projects.
In addition to the campus-wide celebrations, the Electrical and Computer Engineering department hosted an ECE Mixer, which welcomed UAC ECE students, faculty, staff, industry supporters, and their families for an evening of connection. This gathering featured welcome speeches by department chair Hanseup Kim and professor Angela Rasmussen, as well presentations by ECE alumni and industry partners. Students had the opportunity to network with alumni, faculty, and industry members, fostering professional and interpersonal connection.
Electrical and Computer Engineering at UAC
ECE provides two of the nine undergraduate degree programs featured at UAC: electrical engineering and computer engineering. After joining UAC in 2020, the ECE department began its first semester with only four students enrolled. Four years later, ECE now includes nearly 150 UAC students, and recently celebrated its first UAC graduate: Seoin Kim (BS ‘24), who studied computer engineering and has now begun her master’s degree at the University of Utah.
ECE students who begin their academic career at UAC attend courses in Incheon, South Korea for two years, where they are taught by and have the opportunity to engage in research with world-class faculty members. After completing their sophomore year, students complete the remainder of their education at the SLC campus.
A Worldwide Department
In order to foster community across the worldwide department, UAC ECE students have the opportunity to participate in the Utah Asia Campus Summer Program before beginning courses at the Salt Lake campus. During this trip, they are able to connect with faculty and staff, tour the campus, and visit popular Utah destinations such as national parks. This global connection goes both ways: ECE recently launched a sophomore cohort, a group of SLC-based students who attend a semester at the UAC campus during their sophomore year. By doing so, ECE is committed to building community and connection across both campuses as one worldwide team.
As the number of ECE UAC students continues to expand, the department is delighted to welcome them to our global department. We look forward with anticipation to the continued growth of the ECE department at the Utah Asia Campus, and to what the next decade of UAC may bring.
