Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

Note for parents, guardians, spouses, and other family members of students at the University of Utah

Student records at the University of Utah are governed by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

The Act forbids University personnel from releasing personal identifiable student educational records or files, or personal information contained in those files, without the student’s written consent. The Act extends to students and former students of the University the “right to inspect and review” their educational records. The University has established procedures for granting a student’s request for access to his/her records within a reasonable time (no more than 45 days). Educational records do not include sole possession notes held privately by faculty and other academic staff.

Parents and family members of students are welcome to attend advising appointments. However, FERPA limits the discussion of grades and specifics about a student’s program unless a FERPA release has been signed by the student.

Additionally, while a FERPA release allows the discussion of grades in a student’s record with those who have been authorized by the Student, the Act does not require advisors to release this information. As such, advisors in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering reserve the right to ask parents and/or family members to leave the advising appointment at any time.
