Congratulations to University of Utah electrical and computer engineering associate professor (lecturer) John Palmer, who was recently elevated to Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the highest professional grade of IEEE. Only about 10% of the more than 400,000 members earn that level.
Palmer received a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Brigham Young University and a master’s and doctorate degree in electric power engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
He was an assistant professor for the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo., and joined the University of Utah as an electrical and computer engineering associate instructor in 2011. He became an associate professor (lecturer) in 2016. He teaches courses in electric power engineering, including principles of electromechanical energy conversion, power systems, power electronics and power quality, power system protection and failure analysis.
Palmer also was a consulting engineer for NEI Electric Power Engineering, Inc., in Arvada, Colo., and manager of Electrical Engineering and Fire Investigations for Knott Laboratory in Centennial, Colo. Currently, he is president of Palmer Engineering and Forensics in North Salt Lake. He is also a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Association of Fire Investigators, National Fire Protection Association and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization “dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.”
